Productivity Impact

DEFINITION

Productivity impact measures the impact of GitHub Copilot on developer productivity. It is the ratio of new units of code per developer for developers using GitHub Copilot vs. a baseline (by default, all developers in your organization before GitHub Copilot adoption).

HOW IT’S MEASURED

New units of code per developer, a proxy for developer productivity, measures the average amount of new work a developer delivers over a period.

You can compare the productivity of developers using GitHub Copilot to one of three baselines:

  • All developers, before adoption
  • Developers using GitHub Copilot, before adoption
  • Developers not using GitHub Copilot

Both the GitHub Copilot and baseline cohorts include only developers. A developer is any development team member who has created at least one pull request in the last 90 days — excluding bots.
